Why We Compost

While about 60% of yard waste is composted, only about 5% of food waste is composted – that’s about 150,000 tons of food tossed out in US households each day! That’s a lot of waste going to landfills – which are the nation’s third-largest source of methane emissions. Luckily, there IS a solution, and you have the power to make a difference. How? Compost!

Composting is nature's way of recycling. It is a natural biological process where various microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, break down organic waste such as food scraps, yard trimmings and coffee grounds into simpler substances. Composting has the potential to reduce the amount of trash being sent to landfills by at least 30%.

Aside from reducing waste, composting has an array of other benefits:

• Enriches soil fostering robust plant growth

• Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers

• Lowers your carbon footprint

• Positively affects air quality

• Increases biodiversity

• Reduces erosion

Making it a habit to compost at home and at the office contributes to social responsibility, can reduce trash collection expenses and encourage healthy lifestyle practices.

Taking care of our planet and resources is one of our top priorities at Alliant Coffee Solutions. We have made substantial strides in introducing recyclable and compostable materials into our products and packaging. We continue to look for ways in which we can improve our practices and use of sustainable materials.

We are proud to partner with several organizations that promote these ideas, including: Forest Stewardship Council, Fair Trade USA, Rainforest Alliance and Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI).
